18 But someone will say, “You have faith and I have works. Show me your faith without works and I will show you faith by my works.
19 You believe God is one. Good! Even the demons believe – and they shudder.
20 Senseless person! Are you willing to learn that faith without works is useless.”
Even the demons believe – and they shudder. Wow! Why do they shudder?
The demons know who God is. They know his power and his eternal reign which is far above the demons. They have experienced defeat at his mighty hand.
Take the crucifixion of Jesus. Satan must have believed that he was victorious over God’s plan when he saw our Saviour breathe his last. But then, the earth shook, the curtain in the temple was torn in two, and darkness covered the land. Still, Jesus was dead…that is until Sunday. God’s mighty power raised Jesus from the dead and he walked out of that tomb, alive. His death and resurrection not only spared his life but was the ultimate sacrifice for ours.
“Devils believe…they have suffered too much from the hand of God to doubt his existence.”[1]
Even the demons believe – and they shudder. Do we?
Think about that. Do we shudder when we think of the awesomeness and power of our God? Has he become so familiar to us that we forget? Is worshipping him becoming routine?
It’s so easy to tame God and put him in a box in our minds. When that happens, we lose sight of who he really is. He is beyond our comprehension and our control. We are his servants; he is not ours. His kingdom, his righteousness is all that matters. He is God.
Even the demons believe – and they shudder.
